Law Week: More than just the road toll – The impact of alcohol on health and safety

For many people, the phrase ‘If you drink then drive, you’re a bloody idiot’ is the first memory they have of learning about the dangers of alcohol.

But alcohol has a direct impact on far more than just fatalities on the road.

From DIY accidents at home, to falls out and about, and punch-ups at the pub, alcohol consumption can make us vulnerable in many ways.

Hear from a panel of legal and forensic experts about how alcohol consumption can creep into everyday living and the consequences of overindulgence. Find out how the Coroners Court of Victoria works to prevent unnecessary deaths in the community and what is involved in the coronial process when alcohol-related deaths occur.

The panel includes The Hon. John Cain, Victorian State Coroner; Dr Jennifer Schumann, Head of the Drug Intelligence Unit, Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM); Dr Linda Iles, Head of Pathology at VIFM; Dr Jo Ann Parkin, Clinical Forensic Physician at VIFM and Associate Professor Nicola Cunningham from VIFM and St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne.”

This webinar was moderated and hosted by the ABC’s Brian Nankervis.
