Professor Noel Woodford is the Director of the VIFM and Chair of the Department of Forensic Medicine at Monash University. As Director Professor Woodford is the Head of the Institute and the Accountable Officer for the VIFM under the Financial Management Act 1994. He reports to the VIFM Council which is, in turn, accountable to the Attorney-General.

The Director leads and manages the VIFM in accordance with the strategy, plans and policies approved by the VIFM Council to achieve the agreed goals.  The Director is an ex-officio member of the VIFM Council under section 67(2)(b) of the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine Act 1985.  The Director works in partnership with the Chief Operating Officer to ensure that effective management and operational systems and processes are in place at all levels.

The role of the Director is as both an internal and external leader who has primary responsibility for vision, policy and strategy, service delivery content and building external relationships. Professor Woodford also has responsibilities as a senior consultant forensic pathologist.

As Chair of the Department of Forensic Medicine at Monash University, Professor Woodford has a line of responsibility and accountability to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.
