About the VIFM

Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine logo

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Pathology (VIFP) was created as a result of the Coroners Act (1985),  in Section 64(2) it states that the objects of the institute are as follows-

(a) to provide, promote, and assist in the provision of forensic pathology and related services in Victoria and, as far as practicable, oversee and co-ordinate those services in Victoria;

(b) to promote, provide and assist in the postgraduate instruction and training of trainee specialist pathologists in the field of forensic pathology in Victoria;

(d) to provide training facilities for doctors, medical undergraduates and such other persons as may be considered appropriate by Council to assist in the proper functioning of the Institute;

(e) to conduct research in the fields of forensic pathology, forensic science, clinical forensic medicine and associated fields as approved by Council;

Motto

The VIFM motto Veritas Omnia Vincit means Truth Conquers All  and was created for the Institute at its inception.

Government

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) is a body corporate with perpetual succession which was established under the Coroner's Act 1985.

Academic

The VIFM is the Monash University Department of Forensic Medicine

The VIFM is also affiliated with Melbourne University
