PhD & Honours Students

The Molecular Biology laboratory generally accepts one or two Honours students each year through the Genetics Department at Monash University and PhD students from time to time.  Applications from other universities are also considered. These positions are generally very popular and competition is fierce.   Acceptance is based on exceptional undergraduate results, an interview with the Manager of the laboratory and is at the discretion of the university department awarding the honours or PhD degree.

Past research

  • The detection of mutations in suspected Long QT syndrome cases
  • The development of an efficient method of mitochondrial DNA Analysis
  • The detection of sequence mismatches using CELI endonuclease
  • Development of techniques for the analysis of nuclear DNA.  Twelve short tandem, repeat loci were examined and 8 chosen for routine casework.
  • Development of mitochondrial DNA sequencing techniques
  • Investigation of the mutations related to drug metabolism
  • Investigation of the efficiency of statistical methods used in the study of linkage in human populations
  • Investigation of genes related to obesity
