Histology is the study of the structure and function of human tissues. In the forensic setting, it forms an integral part of the autopsy and is a process of discovery. Microscopic examination of human tissue can yield valuable information about the nature and extent of any natural disease or injury present in an individual that may be related to the cause of death.
The histology laboratory aims to provide a timely, high quality, high value service to support Institute functions and objectives. It does this by providing a full range of histological services to Institute Pathologists.
Tissue received into the laboratory undergoes several processes, culminating in the production of extremely thin sections of stained tissue mounted on glass slides. These slides are examined under the light microscope by a pathologist to gather information that could have a bearing on the cause of death.
Further testing may be undertaken using specialised techniques to add to or clarify information already obtained, especially information on natural disease that has the capacity to prevent the death of another member of the community.
Staff
The laboratory comprises a manager who is supported by a dedicated team of scientists. Approximately 40 000 paraffin blocks are processed each year with H&E stained sections on each of these provided to the Pathologists to assist in their determination of a cause of death. Specialised stains, frozen sections and immunocytochemistry are performed upon request by the Pathologists.
The laboratory is driven toward excellence within the field of histopathology and participates in relevant research projects to facilitate this.
Accreditations
The histology laboratory at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine has accreditation from the National Association of Testing Authority (NATA) in Anatomical Pathology. The laboratory also complies with the requirements of AS ISO/ IEC 17025.
Service Provision
The laboratory was established in 1989 as the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine evolved to its full responsibilities under the Coroners Act 1985 in providing a complete forensic pathology service to Victoria.
