Research

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine and the Victorian State Coroner's Office both contribute data to the Coronial Services Centre database. A wide variety of research activity is undertaken by a number of research centres/units across the two organisations.

	Research Portfolio		Research Portfolio is a new initiative that is designed to build on the Institute's research activities by promoting activities across and between service groups and relevant outside collaborators.
	Overview of VIFM		The role of the VIFM including the range of services provided. These include core forensic services, public health activities, providing expert opinions and teaching and training activities.
	Library Resources		The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine has an on-site library with a comprehensive collection of materials and research resources relating to forensic medicine.
	Ethics Committee		The Ethics Committee considers applications from researchers for retrieval of human tissue from autopsies performed at VIFM and for other information generated at VIFM.
	Clinical Liaison		This is a unique service set up to review all aspects of possible adverse events in health care institutions and address the underlying system factors that cause or contribute to these events through advice to the state coroners

	NCIS - Research		The NCIS is a world first national database of coronial information, which contains data from the coronial files of all Australian states and territories.
	Molecular Biology (DNA)		The Molecular Biology section offers several DNA testing services including paternity testing, sibship analysis, DNA testing for immigration matters amongst other services. We also do research to improve these services and to provide extra services to the community.
