The NCIS is a world first electronic national database of coronial information, which contains data from the coronial files of all Australian states and territories (except Queensland) dating back to 1 July 2000. Queensland data commences from 1 January 2001.

The NCIS is a section of the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine which is responsible for obtaining the coronial data from the various jurisdictions, coordinating external access to the system, training users and providing limited data extraction services.

The NCIS team consists of 6 staff members with backgrounds in Information Technology, Information Management, Health Information Management and the Humanities.
