Traffic medicine is a widening sub-specialty which is concerned with medical aspects of road use including:
- Driving behaviour - normal and abnormal
- Social issues in driving
- Effect of drugs, disease and alcohol on driving ability and crash risk
- Fitness to drive
- Interpretation of crash injuries
- Older drivers
The VIFM provides a specialised Traffic Medicine service to Victoria Police, in particular the Traffic Drugs & Alcohol Section and the Major Collision Investigation Group. This includes the collection of biological samples, assessment of drivers and the provision of expert opinions on a wide range of traffic matters.
The VIFM are the medical advisors regarding fitness to drive to VicRoads, the Victorian Taxi Directorate and Worksafe Victoria. We also run the only Clinical Driving Clinic in Australia, at St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne.
