Clinical forensic medicine is principally concerned with the provision of forensic medical services to the living and medical advice particularly in the investigation of crimes. The unit also provides advice in administrative matters such as licencing of motor vehicle drivers.

The service area of Clinical Forensic Medicine is located at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine. The clinical medical staff include specialist forensic physicians and specialist and general practitioners. There are two full-time forensic physicians, a registrar on rotation from the training programme of the Australian College of Accident and Emergency Medicine, sessional specialists and a large number of part-time forensic medical officers scattered throughout the state of Victoria.
