Reviewable Deaths The Victorian Government has introduced a new system for dealing with multiple child deaths in one family. The legislation provides that where there has been a second or subsequent death of a child in a family, this death is termed a “reviewable death” and must be reported to the State Coroner. The State Coroner may refer a reviewable death case to the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (“VIFM”) for investigation.
Clinical Liaison This is a unique service set up to review all aspects of possible adverse events in health care institutions and address the underlying system factors that cause or contribute to these events through advice to the state coroners
Ethics Committee The Ethics Committee considers applications from researchers for retrieval of human tissue from autopsies performed at VIFM and for other information generated at VIFM.
Specialist services The VIFM provides specialist services in a variety of areas that are of interest to the medicolegal fraternity
Publications A number of publications and reports have been produced by the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine and its staff and students.
