The NCIS is a world first national database of coronial information, which contains data from the coronial files of all Australian states and territories (except Queensland) dating back to 1 July 2000. Queensland data commences from 1 January 2001.

The NCIS is a valuable tool for death and injury prevention research. It permits users to conduct national searches on coronial data to identify the frequency and circumstances surrounding particular forms of death.

Access to the NCIS is available for death investigators and certain third party users to conduct research online.

Database searches can also be conducted on behalf for users. Examples of the types of searches previously conducted include:

  • Deaths involving all terrain vehicles
  • The number of deaths in custody
  • The number of fire related deaths
  • The number of deaths involving suicide in a certain locality
  • Deaths involving a particular drug.

There are a range of products and services available through which users can obtain access to NCIS data for an applicable fee. For further information about these types of access and the information available on the system, please visit the NCIS web site.
