The Counselling and Support Service of the State Coroner's Office has been providing support to families, impacted by deaths reported to the Coroner, since 1983.
The death of a partner, child, relative, workmate, or friend is perhaps the most difficult experience that any one of us can go through. When death occurs suddenly, unexpectedly or in traumatic circumstances, it can create a situation which feels overwhelming. Chaos, fear, anger, guilt, numbness, and confusion are common experiences for those left behind.
The Counselling & Support Service can provide assistance in dealing with these experiences.
Family and friends affected by the death, and anyone who has witnessed a death, can get help from the Counselling & Support Service at the Centre.
Amongst the services provided are:
- Short-term counselling and support to any person affected by a death that comes to the attention of the Coroner
- Telephone counselling
- Assistance with understanding the Coronial process
- Assistance for those required to identify the body of a loved one
- Advocating on families behalf with letters of support to employees, schools, etc
- Assistance and support for families attending an Inquest
- Referral to community agencies for longer-term support
The service is free and operates during business hours of 9am - 5pm.
