Master of Forensic Medicine
The course broadly aims to develop academic standards in clinical forensic medical practice and produces graduates who have a sound knowledge of medico-legal principles. Avant and MIPS Medical Law Tutorial Program
Associate Professor Leanna Darvall, in a position jointly funded by Avant and the Medical Indemnity Protection Society (MIPS), coordinates over 70 medical lawyers and clinicians, as well as VIFM staff who provide small group tutorials for students in years one, three and four of the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery) course. The program takes a collaborative approach, including having third year tutorials delivered jointly by lawyers and clinicians at metropolitan and regional hospital sites. Read more…
Elements of Forensic Medicine (Law)
Topics include: medicine and science in the service of the law, including the organisation of the medical profession; biomedical forensic science; scientific evidence and its collection at the scene of a crime; forensic chemistry; forensic photography; firearm examination and tool marks; fingerprint evidence; forensic pathology; forensic odontology and the identification of victims; traffic medicine; the examination of victims of assault; DNA evidence in the courts; prototypes of police investigation; the State Coroner’s system; forensic psychiatry and psychology and issues of criminal responsibility; medico-legal reports in the courts.
