Simple Queries on Forensic Biology/DNA testing

Often a barrister or solicitor has a simple query about some forensic biology matter.  For example, there may be a query about the efficacy of the "presumptive" tests for blood.  This was extensively debated in the Morling Royal Commission into the Chamberlain convictions.  No charge will apply for simple enquiries, as they may be able to be answered quickly by the manager of the laboratory via email.

Typical Issues Which Can Arise in DNA Cases

Although each case is different, the following issues are often raised in cases involving forensic biology: 

• Composition of the stain - e.g.  Is it human blood?
• Quantity and quality of DNA extracted from the stain - e.g.  Has sufficient DNA been analysed to avoid incorrect results?
• Methodology of DNA analysis - e.g.  Have the necessary controls been performed and produced the expected results?
• Interpretation of DNA results - e.g.  Is the reporting scientist's judgement of peaks/bands considered to be artifacts reasonable?
• Population frequency estimates - e.g.  What is the meaning of conditional probability estimates?
