The Victorian Institute of Forensic Pathology (VIFP) was created as a result of the Coroners Act (1985), in Section 64(2) it states that the objects of the institute are as follows-
- to provide, promote, and assist in the provision of forensic pathology and related services in Victoria and, as far as practicable, oversee and co-ordinate those services in Victoria;
- to promote, provide and assist in the postgraduate instruction and training of trainee specialist pathologists in the field of forensic pathology in Victoria;
- to provide training facilities for doctors, medical undergraduates and such other persons as may be considered appropriate by Council to assist in the proper functioning of the Institute;
- to conduct research in the fields of forensic pathology, forensic science, clinical forensic medicine and associated fields as approved by Council;
Motto
The VIFM motto Veritas Omnia Vincit means Truth Conquers All and was created for the Institute at its inception.
Government
The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine is a body corporate with perpetual succession which was established under the Coroner's Act 1985.
